Andy Grant's first memories of hearing guitar music were the Granada television show Handful of Songs, and his big sister's one chord rendition of 'Froggy went a-courting'. He decided, quite firmly "I'm having nothing to do with this!". Time can easily corrupt and corrode ones early ideals, particularly when one is eventually exposed to such devilry as the music of Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and early delta blues.
Wind forward ten years and we find Andy holed up in the living quarters of one of South Africa's largest gold mines, losing himself in those first awkward shapes on the neck of a battered pawn shop acoustic. We all choose our own vehicle for escape, and this one would lead to making music on the street corners of the western world, Melbourne to Copenhagen.
Taking every conceivable guitar style and attempting to master each, Andy felt that this genre hopping approach to be ultimately unsatisfying. The only way to proceed was to create a Frankenstein's monster by bolting together the component parts of each style, from classical to blues and from jazz to rock, the result: the instrumental album Spirals. Those that heard the album loved the results, but for Andy, there was still something missing.
Realising that, as much as he liked guitar music, what Andy really loved was a great song. His next release would also have to feature vocals. By now he was living hand to mouth playing gigs in venues all over the UK, developing a unique singing style in the process. Grabbing every gig to come his way and armed with a repertoire of over 1000 songs the budding singer reconnected with the workings of the greatest songs ever written, but now breaking them down into songwriting fuel.
Andy's new release, 'Hole in the Sky' (2008), is an 11 track collection of original songs that celebrate the human state of being, question the decisions made on our behalf, and instill our hopes for the future, all delivered in a raw, funky and inflective way.
